Procedure
The cap should be removed from the aerosol can and discarded into a nearby general plant trash can.
The aerosol can shall be placed into the puncturing device, close the lid, and pull the handle to puncture the aerosol can. Allow at least 20 seconds for the aerosol can to completely drain the liquids into the drum prior to opening the lid.
After the aerosol cans have been punctured and the liquid has drained into the drum, the punctured aerosol can shall be placed in the container labeled “Scrap Metal” beside the aerosol puncture to be recycled for scrap metal.
The aerosol puncture station should remain closed when not in use.
The spent aerosol drum shall be labeled with a preprinted hazardous waste label prepared by the Environmental Department, along with a flammable sticker. Once the drum is full, the Environmental Department should be contacted for further instructions on proper handling and disposal.
All empty aerosol cans should be immediately disposed of properly. An aerosol can that is empty/unusable is considered “Improper Storage of a Hazardous Waste” if it is located inside of a flammable cabinet or stored in any other manner due to the residual contents remaining inside the aerosol can.
