Scrap Metal

A core pillar of environmental stewardship is to recycle things that can be recycled. At Tyler Union, one of the main inputs for our castings is recycled iron. We use metals that have reached the end of their life in one function, melt it back down, and create a new product.
We aim to continue that cycle with the metal waste we generate here on site. We use metal tools, products, and objects all over the plant. Once the tool, product, or object reaches its end of life it should be recycled in the red roll of containers on site.

Maintenance Materials

Maintenance should place any metallic waste generated into scrap metal, including but not limited to, old equipment, sheet metal, old drums, old tools, etc. When scrapping a piece of equipment, “UNF-EWI-092-17 Equipment Removal and Storage” should be followed.

Drums/Hoppers containing oil

Metal containers should be reused if possible. If containers are going to be scrapped, ensure the container is drained of any free liquid and any oily residue is wiped from the container and discarded as non-hazardous waste. If the container has a lid, it should be fastened tightly to the container when discarded. If the container previously held flammable materials such as paint, the previous hazardous label should be spray painted over.

Metal Scraps

Gates and other types of necessary excess can be remelted and turned into usable product. As molds and castings go through the finishing process, these scrap pieces will be collected into hoppers and disposed of on the runway to be remelted

Labels and Discarding

Scrap Metal should be discarded in a red roll-off or in a container with a white “SCRAP METAL” label.

Scrap Metal is picked up by a vendor and recycled.
